  • Supporting Colleagues to Help Reduce Health Inequalities Across the System

    Five new e-learning modules have been launched to support systems in the implementation of Core2PLUS5: NHS England’s approach to reducing healthcare inequalities. The e-learning modules cover narrowing health inequalities in; Hypertension, Early Cancer Diagnosis, Chronic Respiratory Disease, Maternity and Severe Mental Illness. The modules are aimed at anyone with a responsibility or interest in reducing health inequalities – especially those working to deliver services in the ‘5’ clinical priority areas. Each module takes around 30 minutes to complete and are available for free on the HEE E-learning for health platform

    • This programme provides a practical toolkit of useful resources to help individuals and their multidisciplinary teams identify their unique contribution and then implement quality improvement initiatives to transform services.  The content is pragmatic and iterative, recognising the competing pressures on front line teams.  The tools and resources highlighted can be useful in more than one stage of the 5-step process and will be inter-dependent with wider improvement initiatives.

      • Fingertips is a large public health data set. The data is organised into themed profiles, showing an overview of indicators for each theme. Fingertips holds insights and the ultimate aim of the platform is to improve health and wellbeing and reduce inequalities.  

        The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities runs monthly introductory webinars on Fingertips to get people familiar with the tool, build their confidence, and show them how to find their way around the different functionalities (including the inequalities view). If this is your first-time using Fingertips, they suggest starting by attending one of these webinars in the first instance. All training dates are published on their events page.         • This e-learning supports the use of the tool, providing the context and purpose, outlining the benefits of using the tool, and taking the learner step-by-step through each stage of the tool. It also provides a general introduction to health inequalities and equity, as well as examples of good practice. ​

          The intended audience for HEAT is a wide range of professionals who want to make a difference in relation to inequalities and equality in their services and work programmes.

          • The Health Improvement course aim to build and strengthen the capacity of staff and partners to improve health and tackle health inequalities. It explore why tackling inequalities is everyone`s responsibility, what approaches can be applied and to reflect on how to include these in your working practices.

            • The course helps staff at all levels understand the causes and consequences of health inequalities in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship, and learn practical strategies to address these in their own settings.

              Organised by the East of England Cancer Alliances and Health Education England, the training includes a blend of webinars and online learning led by an expert provider.

              The course is free and open to all colleagues across the East of England with an interest in improving cancer outcomes for all. Participants learn from experts in the field, interact with peers from different backgrounds and perspectives, and apply their knowledge and experience to real-world scenarios.

              • Health Inequality Monitoring Course Series

                Health inequality monitoring entails quantifying and assessing health inequalities in a defined population to inform where changes are needed to advance health equity.


                The course provides an understanding about the foundations of health inequality monitoring, its application to specific topics and skill building.

                • This training is a 75 minute trainer led virtual session on health literacy, with 60 minutes accredited content from the Royal Society for Public Health:

                  • Promoting health literacy is everyone’s responsibility. NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and Health Education England (HEE) have collaborated to develop a new eLearning module to help you understand the role health literacy plays in making sure everyone has enough knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence to use health information, to be active partners in their care, and to navigate health and social care systems. The eLearning session takes about 30 minutes to complete.

                    • These modules are designed to help the healthcare workforce (clinical and non-clinical) build confidence to search published literature for articles and evidence relevant to their work, study and research. The modules are short (each taking no more than 20 minutes to complete) and may be ‘dipped into’ for reference, or completed to obtain a certificate. There are seven modules suitable for novice searchers and those wishing to refresh their knowledge.

                      • This course is developed alongside the Royal College of General Practitioners. The course explores health inequalities – what they are and why they matter to patients, communities and practitioners. The first module is relevant to all practitioners in the United Kingdom and offers an introduction to health inequalities including an overview of the National Healthcare Inequalities Improvement Programme.  A module on leadership is also available examining different approaches to tackling health inequalities at various levels of influence. It focuses on practical actions to make a difference. The course is free to access from the Royal College of General Practitioners.
