Allied Health Professionals
What is an Allied Health Professional (AHP)?
AHP’s are a vast and varied professional collective, but all play a vital part in treating, rehabilitating, and improving the lives of patients. They're the third largest group of staff in the NHS after nurses, and doctors. The AHPs are made up of 14 different professions, including paramedics and podiatrist, drama therapist and dietitians!
To find out more about each of these 14 careers, click the links on the right side of this page.
AHPs provide system-wide care to assess, treat and diagnose patients. They also play and important role in discharging patients across social care, housing and education, as well as independent and voluntary sectors.AHP Career Pathway

Employers' Guide to Podiatry
How to attract, recruit and retain podiatrists to transform your service.
Employers in the NHS are facing challenges with recruiting and retaining podiatrists. Developing the podiatry workforce is vital if the NHS is to provide patients with the necessary podiatric care they require at the right time with the right skills at the right level. Central to this development is the need for services to fully utilise the skill mix that is available to them. Podiatry services are provided by a range of clinical staff from the support workforce to advanced (also known as ACP) and consultant level practitioners. In developing services, patient safety is paramount.Employers' guide to podiatry | NHS Employers

AHP Return to Practice
During the course of your career, you may not practise your profession for a period of time. This may be for many reasons, which could include parental leave, extended travel, caring responsibilities or illness.
We know that you may want to come back to your profession and resume practising, which is why the health and care professions council have set up a process.
For information about the process you need to complete if you are returning to practice after a break of more than two years please click on the link below.

International Recruitment
The NHS Long Term plan sets out the challenges facing all Health and Social Care Professions which can only be met by having a workforce of the right size with the right skills. Ethical International Recruitment is a vital component of expanding the AHP workforce to deliver the Long Term Plan vision. Recruitment of well trained and committed internationally educated AHP’s with an ethical and sustainable approach, can increase entry routes into healthcare, and provide a wealth of experience and diversity to our workforce.
